So where do you begin??

There are so many people who come to me scratching their heads not having the first clue on how to start a design project they have in mind. Once we sit and talk for a few minutes, they typically realize that have had a starting point right in their own home and never knew how to use it. Below are some good starting points to consider if you are scratching your head as well.
So where do you begin with your design project?
1. Take a good look around your home and find your most favorite things. Walk around each room of your house and pick up one or two items from each room that you just absolutely adore and place them all on your dining room table. It could be a beautiful pillow, an area rug, a pillow sham from the bed, a picture hanging on the wall. Just with this first simple process, you have already narrowed down the vast possibilities that could be before you.
2. After gathering these adored items and placing them on the table, take a good look at them and narrow the pile down even more. Sit down with your husband or whomever will be involved with this design project with you and discuss what you like about each item that is sitting on the table. When you find around three that both of you agree upon, pull those aside and start working with them.
3. Consider each item carefully. What specifically is it about these three pieces that you both just love? Is it the colors in it? Is it the textures that are put together in it? Is it formal or casual?
4. Now consider whether these traits of these pieces would be perfect for your room you are designing. Do you both want to change your room to the colors represented here in these pieces? Or does the style of this piece represent the change you want in your room? Do you want to use the same textures or the idea of mixing textures? In the case of an area rug that may have been handed down to you from your grandparents, is that something that you MUST use in the room so any new design will have to work around and with the rug?
5. Look at the colors, textures, and style. In just about a half hour now, you have chosen a color palette, a style and possible fabrics to use or be inspired by if now used exactly. WAY TO GO!! You are on your way.
6. Now, was that so hard? Choosing a beloved, MUST-USE piece that will go into your new room design is the BEST WAY to get inspired on what colors to use for paint, fabric for draperies, patterns and textures for wallpaper or coordinating furniture.
